THINK SNOW!

my sled team

training mazzy to pull, summer 2001

So here I am -- finally living in Minnesota, dreaming of dogsledding through the upcoming winter, and trying to keep one very active puppy happy. It seemed the right time to begin pull-training Mazzy. I hooked up a small log to his harness and off we went. Mazzy was a natural, straining to run at full speed. I've since learned that pull-training is best done at a slower pace, as the initial focus should be on the pulling, not the speed. Speed will always come later. But fortunately dogs are resilient to the errors of their clueless trainers and things turned out ok.

our first sled run on snow, january 2002

Here we are at our first attempt at using the sled. Not too bad for a first try. Jasper seemed to know what to do without much prompting and the pull-training with Mazzy really paid off now. I was very proud of both my boys for keeping their tuglines tight the whole time.

tangled already i have no idea what i'm doing here we go! ...and here we come

january/february 2003

We finally received a major snowfall this winter -- 15" or so. We're trying to make the best of it but some warm weather since then (plus the snowmobiles) have pretty much wrecked the trails. I'm buying a wheeled-cart in the spring.

These were taken at Elm Creek Reserve. Not the best condition trail in the world, but it is the closest one.

These next pictures were taken at the Gateway Trail, near White Bear Lake, Minnesota. I just love the sequence of the first four pictures where Mazzy and Cirrus get increasingly more excited about wanting to run.
ok, we stopped... ok, that's enough pictures... shouldn't we be going? we want to go RIGHT NOW! ricq pauses for a picture and we're off again! my handsome boys

These last pictures were taken on what may be our last run of the season. Jasper and Tess did very well at Crow-Hassan Reserve.

north dakota, november 2003

Helen and Bob Newman were kind enough to invite some Sammy people to run their trails in North Dakota. We earned our first Working Samoyed points that weekend on a five-mile carting run on prairie roads through vast farm fields. Thanks for the photos Bob, Helen, and Scott!
